Polypropylene

It is a thermoplastic material which is obtained from the polymerization of propylene or propene. It is distinguished by its good thermal resistance and excellent resistance to various chemical solvents such as acids and alkalis. In particular, PP is used for applications requiring high temperature resistance (microwave) or low temperature (frozen).

It can be processed by: Injection, Blow Molding, Extrusion and Thermoforming.

Applications
Homopolymer Polypropylene
It is a polymer containing only propylene monomers along its polymeric chain. It presents high resistance to temperature, good resistance to acids and bases at temperatures below 80°C; few organic solvents can dissolve it at room temperature. It possess good dielectric properties, its tensile strength is excellent in combination with elongation, its resistance to impact is good at room temperature, but it is fragile and brittle at temperatures below 0°C.

Some of its applications are: caps in general, films for packaging (candies, cigarettes, clothing), packs, containers, airtight containers, kitchen utensils, toys, furniture.

Random Copolymer Polypropylene
It is a propylene-ethylene copolymer that has a high molecular weight and thus has an excellent transparency, low toughness, high flexibility, barrier properties to moisture, resistance to compression and temperature. Also, its tensile strength as well as its elongation is increased; however, chemical resistance is lower than that of PP Homopolymer, a weakness that is accentuated at elevated temperatures.

Some of its applications are: highly transparent packs, containers for hot filling and with multilayer barrier, transparent films for packaging (foods, toys, cigarettes, games), food containers for microwave use, toys.

Block or Impact Copolymer Polypropylene
It is a copolymer containing a higher content of ethylene (between 10 and 25%). It is distinguished mainly for having a high impact resistance at both room temperature and low temperatures, and has a good toughness.

Some of its applications are: automotive parts, bumpers, battery case, paint containers, outdoor furniture, suitcases, containers, industrial buckets.
