Polystyrene (PS) is a polymer that is derived from a monomer called Styrene.
 
Applications
CRYSTAL POLYSTYRENE (GPPS)
It is popularly known as GPPS (General Purpose Polystyrene). It is the polymerization of pure styrene and is considered as one of the plastics with greater transparency and glossy surface. It also presents high toughness, fragility and easy processing.
Some of its applications are: food packaging, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals (blisters, plastic cups, caps), disposable containers.

HIGH IMPACT POLYSTYRENE (HIPS)
Commonly referred to as HIPS (High Impact Polystyrene). It is a material composed of a copolymer forming bonds between oligomers of styrene and polybutadiene. It is distinguished for being resistant to wear and have greater impact resistance.
Some of its applications are: telephones, computer keyboards and peripherals, automotive components, household appliance casing, household goods and containers.

ACRYLONITRILE BUTADIENE STYRENE (ABS)
It is a hard thermoplastic, resistant to heat and impacts (shocks), even at very low temperatures. Its low thermal conductivity supports its use in cold and climate-controlled areas. It is widely used in the Automotive Industry, Appliances and Industrial Sector.
Some of its applications are: cases for TVs, radios, computers, mouse devices, copiers, printers and appliances, refrigerator interior parts, chrome-plated autoparts, motor casing, sporting helmets, suitcases, toys (LEGO® type blocks).

ACRYLONITRILE STYRENE ACRYLATE (ASA)
It is a tri-copolymer that has excellent impact resistance and weatherability. It has greater resistance to discoloration, UV radiation resistance, and better properties for light transmission.
Some of its applications are: radiator grilles, front and rear ailerons.

STYRENE ACRYLONITRILE (SAN)
It is a copolymer that has greater impact properties, as well as tensile strength and flexural strength, thus having greater chemical and thermal resistance and higher toughness than polystyrene. However, it is not transparent, so it is used in products that do not require optical clarity, but it has an extraordinary surface gloss.

It is resistant to oils, greases, formaldehyde, gasoline and hydrochloric acid. This copolymer is not chemically attacked by water.
Some of its applications are: household appliances (mixers, blenders, vacuum cleaners, etc.); medical (disposables for dialysis equipment) and food industry (as food saver because it represents an excellent barrier against moisture and CO2).

STYRENE-BUTADIENE COPOLYMER (SBC)
It is a thermoplastic that combines the transparency and gloss of Crystal Polystyrene with the high impact strength of Butadiene.

It is characterized by its permeability to gases and water vapor, does not absorb moisture and, unlike most plastics, has no elastic memory.
Some of its applications are: transparent disposable containers (mixed with polystyrene), films that allow fresh cut fruits and vegetables to retain their freshness over longer time periods, candy twist wrap (it can be twisted due to its lack of elastic memory), clothes hangers, heat shrink labels, household goodsand personal hygiene products.

EXPANDABLE POLYSTYRENE (EPS)
The raw material, Expandable Polystyrene, is manufactured by the polymerization of styrene with the introduction of pentane as an expansion agent.

This polymer is presented in spherical beads with a diameter between 0.3 and 2 mm. It is mainly used as an insulator at low temperatures, thermal protector and shock absorber (it allows to absorb energy produced by bumps and vibrations).
Some of its applications are: disposable containers, ice coolers; in the packaging sector (boxes for seafood, fruit, dairy products; furniture protectors, electronics, household appliances, tools, machinery), in the construction sector (panels, coverings, insulation of floors, ceilings and walls), and in marine flotation.
