Polyethylene
 
It is a thermoplastic material that is obtained by the polymerization of ethylene, from which its name is derived. The properties of polyethylene resins are determined according to three basic molecular properties: density, average molecular weight and molecular weight distribution.

If the density of polyethylene increases, so its properties, such as toughness, hardness, tensile strength, abrasion resistance, chemical resistance and softening point. However, this increase means a decrease in other properties as brightness, tear resistance, elongation and impact.

It can be processed by: Injection, Blow Molding, Extrusion and Rotomolding.
 
Applications
Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE)
It is a material with good impact resistance, easy processing, low electrical conductivity and good chemical and thermal resistance. The LDPE has a density in the range of 0.910-0.925 g/cm3 in terms of the molecular structure of the polymer.

Some of its applications are: bags, containers, shrink films and greenhouse films, caps, sacks, industrial containers, laminations, toys, household goods (cups, plates, cutlery), cable coating, irrigation pipes.

Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE)
It is a copolymer, which is why its physical properties are altered by the length of the comonomer. It has a good tensile strength, tear resistance and perforation or puncture resistance, good impact resistance at very low temperatures (to -95°C) and in films it has excellent elongation. The LLDPE has a density range between 0.918 to 0.940 g/cm3in terms of the molecular structure of the polymer.

Some of its applications are: shrink and stretch wrap films, heavy duty sacks, bags for vacuum-packed foods (cold meats and cheeses), ice bags, disposable diapers and padded packaging for agricultural products.

High Density Polyethylene (HDPE)
It is a material that has excellent thermal and chemical resistance, easy processing and good resistance to impact and abrasion. It presents better mechanical properties of toughness, hardness and tensile strength than LDPE and LLDPE; this is due to its greater density. The HDPE has a density range from 0.941 to 0.965 g/cm3in terms of the molecular structure of the polymer.

Some of its applications are: films, bags, food packaging, detergents and chemicals, pipes, connections, toys, household goods (trays, trash cans, buckets, plates, pots).

High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (HMWPE)
It has properties as good tear resistance, wide operating temperature range (from -40 to 120°C), water impermeability and keeps no odors. This material is mainly used to make films due to its mechanical and chemical properties, such as its easiness for print and fold. The HMWPE has a density range between 0.944 and 0.954 g/cm3 in terms of the molecular structure of the polymer.
Some of its applications are: films, bags, food packaging, coatings for cans, pressure piping.
